4 Day Timber Framing Experience

ABOUT THE EVENT

Build More Than a Structure - Engage Your Body, Expand Your Mind

Come engage your body in a unique experience.

We’re going to be working hard: sawing, drilling, planing, chopping, cutting, and raising a timber frame structure using the strength of our own bodies.
We’ll have fun learning practical skills that boost creativity and expand our capacity for imagination.

The work of our hands will feed our minds, connect us to something deeper, and give us a renewed sense of purpose.
And yes, there will be a whole lot of satisfaction and joy in the process.

What you will learn

What to Expect:

Four immersive days of hands-on learning, reflection, and reconnection – in nature, with tools, and with yourself.

Learn the Craft

Explore the foundations of traditional timber framing. You’ll learn how to choose the right logs, take accurate measurements, and prepare raw timber using time-honored techniques. This isn’t theory – it’s full immersion. You’ll shape wood by hand with chisels, saws, drills, and planes. Every cut connects you more deeply to the rhythm of the work. No machines. No shortcuts. Just you, the tools, and the wood.

Build With Purpose

Timber framing is about more than building – it’s about doing it with care. You’ll lay out joints using scribe, square rule, and mill rule methods, understanding why each mark matters. With hands-on support, you’ll assemble a real timber frame. The process teaches precision and patience. Each joint becomes a quiet act of focus and intention.

Reconnect with nature

Leave behind the noise and step into stillness. This retreat helps you unplug and reconnect with your senses – your breath, your hands, the forest. As you work with hand tools under the trees, you’ll rediscover the peace of being fully present. In the evenings, gather by the fire, share food and stories, and find joy in simple human connection.

What You’ll Take With You

You’ll leave with a solid foundation in timber framing – and much more. Expect greater focus, clarity, and confidence in both craft and self. You’ll feel reconnected to nature and the value of slowing down. This is more than learning a skill. It’s remembering how to be grounded, present, and purposeful.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need any woodworking experience to join?

Do I need any woodworking experience to join?

Not at all. The workshop is beginner-friendly. Whether you’re a complete novice or someone with experience looking to deepen your skills, the class is designed to meet you where you are. Clear instruction and hands-on guidance are provided every step of the way.

What will I actually learn during the workshop?

You’ll learn the foundations of traditional timber framing:

  • Selecting and preparing raw timber

  • Layout techniques (scribe, square rule, and mill rule)

  • Cutting mortise and tenon joinery by hand

  • Using classic tools like chisels, mallets, hand saws, and more
You’ll also assemble a real timber frame and walk away with both knowledge and confidence.

Where is the workshop held?

The workshop takes place on a quiet, 7-acre forested property in DeForest, Wisconsin (just 20 minutes north of Madison). Exact directions will be shared upon registration.

How many people are in each class?

We keep each session intentionally small – just 6 participants max. This allows for focused learning, a peaceful environment, and more personal instruction.

Is lodging included or available nearby?

Lodging is not included, but we provide a list of nearby hotels, motels, Airbnbs, and campsites upon registration. If you enjoy rustic experiences, tent camping is available on-site at no extra charge (basic amenities only).

What should I bring?

We recommend:

  • Sturdy closed-toe shoes or work boots

  • Comfortable clothing that can get dusty

  • Work gloves (optional)

  • Water bottle, and any personal tools if you have them (not required)

Can I come for just one day?

This is a full 4-day immersive experience. Each day builds on the last, so we require that all participants commit to the entire workshop for the best learning and group dynamic.

Is it physically demanding?

Some physical effort is involved – lifting beams, standing, swinging a mallet – but you don’t need to be an athlete. We’ll guide you in using tools safely and efficiently. Breaks are encouraged, and the pace is respectful of each participant.

Is there an age requirement?

Yes. Participants must be 18 or older. Exceptions for mature teens (16+) may be considered with a parent or guardian attending. Reach out if you’re unsure.

What’s the refund or cancellation policy?

Full refunds are available up to 21 days before the start date. After that, partial credit may be offered depending on circumstances. Because of the small class size, last-minute cancellations impact others’ opportunity to attend.

Who is the instructor?

The class is led by Mike Yaker, also known as Chief Bad Axe – The Speaking Tree. With over 35 years of experience in woodworking, carpentry, and timber framing, Mike brings depth, patience, and heart to every class.
